BLM collective

The Bevilacqua la Masa Foundation has been active for the last century in promoting the arts, in particular with an annual exhibition of up-and-coming artists called Young Artists’ Collective. The foundation has had a contest for their 99th collective, to find the official artwork of the event. My entry was chosen among hundreds and has been used for communication, i.e. posters, invites, catalogues, roller banners and more.

THE POSTER

The photo depicts a young girl, element that ironically plays on the youth of the artists, in a cocky, challenging attitude: looking straight at the viewer while doing something indecent: picking her nose.

The structure is also worth noting. The photo offers the viewer many paths to read the composition. For example, the bright red wig catches the attention with its color and, after framing the face, core of the photo, takes the eye diagonally to the bottom right corner (image 1). Another path starts from the eyes and the “obscene act” and, passing by the mouth, brings us once again to the bottom right corner (image 2).

I could analyse the photo much further, but I’ll just mention the vertical division between black and white (image 3) and the curves as a recurring element (image 4).

THE MATERIAL

As mentioned, the artwork was then used for a catalogue, banners and more.

The award, won with the entry of that photo, means a lot to me, since the photo was taken by father and the young girl is my sister.
